In post-season fantasy football, the ability of a player’s team to stick around is just as important as his individual talent. That’s why Aaron Bruski was able to pick up Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald with the third selection of Round 2.

Four games later, the wideout’s two-touchdown, 127-yard Super Bowl effort grabbed Bruski the title of Mr. Fantasy Football in SportsBuff.com’s premier salary cap contest, with national champions dating back to its inaugural season in 1993.

Bruski finished fifth in the regular season to join the rest of the top eight finishers and Dave Gawron — who runs the Roto Commando blog and beat 75 fantasy experts in the VIP/Reporters league (finishing three disturbing spots ahead of Yours Truly) — in Vegas for the playoff draft.

Bruski’s Fitzgerald- and Willie Parker-led squad trailed Madonna Montz’s team by 11 heading into the big game but wound up with a comfortable 20-point cushion. Steve Homiak, who was in first place following the regular-season component of the contest, rode Kurt Warner to a third-place finish after using his first playoff pick on DeAngelo Williams.

The group traveled to Las Vegas on Jan. 4 for a three-day stay, conducting its purely serious business at Planet Hollywood. The post-season draft and VIP party took place at the nearby Hawaiian Tropic Bar and Restaurant. Sports Buff has been taking its top finishers on vacation since January 1995, when the first crew took a Carnival Cruise to the Bahamas. (Then again, maybe “vacation” is too favorable a word when you realize that you have to put up with Jeff Thomas the whole time.)

Bruski formerly ran a fantasy site called DreamWired.com and now writes updates for Rotoworld. Had Montz hung on, she would have been Sports Buff’s first Ms. Fantasy Football.

“Madonna’s regular season performance and post-season draft strategy from the sixth spot were extremely impressive, earning the well-deserved respect of the entire Sports Buff Nation,” said Thomas, founder of SportsBuff.com.

The Fantasy Sports Writers Association gave out its 2008 honors on Tuesday at the FSTA winter business conference, and a third of them went to RotoWire.

Repeat victories in the categories of best baseball print publication and best baseball writer (Jeff Erickson) led an effort that garnered six plaques in all for the company. It was the second straight year that RotoWire claimed six awards. No other company earned more than three this time around.

This year’s haul also included writer of the year nods in golf, racing and college sports — the first time that last category has been included in the FSWA program. The lone surprise might have been that RotoWire’s Janet Eagleson ceded the award for top hockey writer to someone else (ESPN’s Sean Allen) for the first time in the category’s three-year existence.

“I’m shocked and surprised since it was a very strong field with a lot of outstanding writers,” RotoWire president Peter Schoenke told FSB.com on Wednesday. “I’m very happy for the first-time winners on our staff and proud that both our top editors for MLB and NFL won awards.”

The FSWA has been giving out awards since 2004. Entries are whittled down to finalists by the board of directors, with winners determined by a panel of three independent judges. This year, that panel included Wisconsin-Stevens Point journalism professor Dr. Steven Hill, Ithaca College journalism professor and Society of Professional Journalists board member Mead Loop, and longtime sports columnist for the Washington Post Len Shapiro.

1) How important to you is your work with young writers? Why?
It’s a large reason why I remain in this industry. I was fortunate to have a couple of mentors during my formative years as a writer, and now I try to do what I can to help young fantasy writers perfect their craft and find jobs. As Woody Hayes put it, it’s about “paying forward.”

2) What motivated you to launch your own site with Fantasy GMs? What have you gotten out of business management that just isn’t there for a writer?
I had been with Draft Sharks for a season and decided I could do this on my own. It was the first real business risk of my life, but it was exciting. I knew nothing about operating a business — organizing the paperwork, screening potential employees, tracking growth — but I was young and anxious to learn everything I could. I think every man/woman should operate their own business at least once throughout the course of their life.

3) You have performed in central roles with the FSWA since its inception. What makes it so important to you? What do you hope to get from it, and what are you trying to make sure it gets from you?
The FSWA is the purest organization I’ve been a part of. No one is paid a nickel, yet everyone involved gives freely of their time for the greater good of the fantasy writers. I think it’s because all of the people involved — the executive committee, the board — we’ve all experinced what it’s like to be a young writer with big dreams. I need nothing for my contribution; but I’ve committed to do all I can to grow this organization, and I hope to be involved for a long time.
