RotoExperts Challenges Writers

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

A lot of sites give away prizes here and there to the audience, plenty ask you to do something to earn it and pretty much any content outlet is always on the lookout for quality writing.

With its Fight for Your Write competition, RotoExperts.com is combining all of that while also encouraging folks to get as familiar as possible with its content.

Here’s the deal, RotoExperts.com is accepting article submissions up through April 2 in which contestants are asked to describe how the sites baseball draft kit helped them. One winner will get a copy of 2K Sports’ Major League Baseball 2K10, an Evan Longoria Fathead Jr. and a Buffalo Wild Wings sweatshirt. That person will also get his or her article published on RotoExperts.com.

“It certainly is a talent search,” RotoExperts’ Scott Engel told FSB.com. “One of our editors has already asked to play the role of Simon Cowell.”

Aside from providing some positive PR for the site and drawing any readers encouraged by the prizes, such a challenge can work like the old Open Pen competitions that Matthew Berry’s TalentedMrRoto.com used to host. There’s certainly no guarantee that the winner (or any entrant) turns into a regular contributor, but it’s worth a shot.

And even if that end of it doesn’t work out, it’s still fun to win some prizes, the first two of which are being provided by 2K Sports.

“Personally, I’m an avid sports gamer and wing eater, so I’m glad we’re doing this,” Engel said.

FSB Daily 1/11: Fabiano vs. Ocho, WSJ, Stinkball, NBDL

Monday, January 11th, 2010

A roundup of items recently posted on the FSB News page.

– Fantasy veteran Scott Engel of RotoExperts passed along this link to Michael Fabiano’s Twit-for-tat with Chad Ochocinco in advance of the Bengals’ Week 17 matchup with the Jets. Fabiano, the lead fantasy guy for NFL.com and NFL Network, apparently drew Ocho’s Twitt-ire for having the gall to suggest sitting him against the Jets in a game the wideout ultimately came away from with zero catches.

– It’s been almost two weeks since the article first ran, but it’s still worth taking a look at Nando Di Fino’s roundup of 2009 in the world of fantasy sports.

– Stinkball.com is running a weekly game throughout the NFL playoffs in which each winner gets a football signed by San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis.

– NBA-level fantasy basketball could stand to be a little stronger, but that doesn’t mean that die hards aren’t out there. Those that fall into that category might want to check out fantasy NBDL.

RotoWire Dominates FSWA Awards

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

The Fantasy Sports Writers Association gave out its 2008 honors on Tuesday at the FSTA winter business conference, and a third of them went to RotoWire.

Repeat victories in the categories of best baseball print publication and best baseball writer (Jeff Erickson) led an effort that garnered six plaques in all for the company. It was the second straight year that RotoWire claimed six awards. No other company earned more than three this time around.

This year’s haul also included writer of the year nods in golf, racing and college sports — the first time that last category has been included in the FSWA program. The lone surprise might have been that RotoWire’s Janet Eagleson ceded the award for top hockey writer to someone else (ESPN’s Sean Allen) for the first time in the category’s three-year existence.

“I’m shocked and surprised since it was a very strong field with a lot of outstanding writers,” RotoWire president Peter Schoenke told FSB.com on Wednesday. “I’m very happy for the first-time winners on our staff and proud that both our top editors for MLB and NFL won awards.”

The FSWA has been giving out awards since 2004. Entries are whittled down to finalists by the board of directors, with winners determined by a panel of three independent judges. This year, that panel included Wisconsin-Stevens Point journalism professor Dr. Steven Hill, Ithaca College journalism professor and Society of Professional Journalists board member Mead Loop, and longtime sports columnist for the Washington Post Len Shapiro.

FSB Daily 1/22: RotoExperts, OneSeason, KFFL, Fishing

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

A roundup of recent posts on the FSB News page.

– Scott Engel and Paul Bourdett of RotoExperts will join Fantasy Sports Channel managing editor Marc Ronick for nine hours of coverage from the FSTA winter business conference’s first day on Tuesday. The programming will stream live on BlogTalkRadio.

– The sports stock-market site has nailed down $3.5 million in Series A funding. As part of the new deals, OneSeason has also added new members to its board of directors and advisory board, most notably hall of fame safety Ronnie Lott.

– KFFL’s Tim Heaney — a 2008 FSWA finalist for Best Baseball Article in Print — rounds up news on players from the Caribbean leagues who are or will be worth the attention of fantasy owners. KFFL also features similar roundups from the Arizona Fall League (AL and NL) and the Hawaiian Winter Baseball league.

– Professional angler and ESPN Outdoors commentator Kevin Short wonders aloud (in writing) why there’s a bigger purse on the FLW fantasy fishing contest than on the fishing tour itself.
