Colton’s Fantasy Work Draws WSJ

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Veterans of the fantasy sports industry — and especially regular attendees of the FSTA conferences — have long been familiar with Glenn Colton. Now, The Wall Street Journal is spreading the word about his fantasy exploits.

The former federal prosecutor — and current partner at New York City’s Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP firm — was featured over the weekend by the Journal for his history in fantasy baseball.

“Colton is on a short list of the country’s best fantasy baseball players,” the story attributes to Rick Wolf, a college friend of Colton’s and director of business development for NBC Sports Digital. Wolf, of course, came over to NBC with the acquisition of Rotoworld.

In reference to their teaming up on teams in the LABR and Tout Wars “expert” leagues since 2002, Wolf said: “He would be a champion without me. It’s a simple as that.”

Colton has been playing fantasy since starting a league in 1988 with law school friends at NYU, skipping the NL- and AL-only formats to go the route of East divisions alone. (Back in those pre-Internet days, the group found it easier to focus on teams whose box scores would be more easily accessible on the East Coast.) Colton is the lone remainder of the founding class in a league that now includes his 17-year-old son.

“Now that the game has become a little bit more mature, people are playing with their kids,” Colton told the Journal. “It’s a serious way to connect with your kids.”

Outside of playing the games, Colton’s contributions to fantasy include a weekly column for Rotoworld — The Week that Was — and regular presentations to attendees of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association conferences. The lawyer is a staple there, providing updates to the legal issues facing the industry.

At the most recent gathering, his talk included further treatment of the state-specific payout restrictions, as well as insight into some other potentially impactful bills making the rounds at the state and federal levels.

FSB Daily 6/26: FF Librarian, No Offseason, FF Help

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

A roundup of items recently posted on the FSB News page.

– The Fantasy Football Librarian has started to calculate and release “expert” accuracy rankings combining the three years that she has been measuring. So far, RotoWorld leads the pack for ranking receivers before the season over the past three years. Ask the Commish edged RotoWorld at quarterback.

– Dynasty formats in fantasy football seem to be gaining in popularity as both the overall pool of fantasy players and segment of serious players grow. NoOffseason.com is reaching out to that audience with its just-released Dynasty Draft Guide, published as an online magazine.

– Ready Set Go Fantasy Sports, the parent company of FantasyFootballStarters.com, has rolled out FantasyFootballHelp.com. The new site follows the still young trend of crowdsourcing by allowing users to create blogs, find articles and share advice and content with others.

– Yahoo! Sports blogger Kevin Kaduk (Big League Stew) identifies Silly Little Game as the weakest of the documentaries to date in ESPN’s “30 for 30″ series. We certainly weren’t fans either.

– If you like The Electric Company and fantasy football and have a spare minute, you might enjoy this quick video.

Cordella Climbs NBC Sports Ladder

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

NBC Sports Digital announced a round of promotions Tuesday that included Rick Cordella adding “vice president” to his title.

Cordella will now serve as the VP/general manager of NBC Sports Digital and handle the unit’s daily operations.

“Rick has overseen the tremendous growth of NBCSports.com, integrating ProFootballTalk.com and developing its new and very successful blog strategy,” Gary Zenkel, NBC Sports executive VP of strategic partnerships, was quoted as saying. “(He and senior VP Kevin Monaghan) are a great team and, along with our MSNBC.com partners in Redmond, will lead NBC Sports Digital into new endeavors and emerging areas for years to come.”

Cordella joined NBC in 2006 as part of the acquisition of AllStar Sports, which had hired him just two years earlier. AllStar, of course, is best known around the fantasy industry for its flagship brand, Rotoworld. Colleague Rick Wolf previously told FSB.com that Cordella’s value emerged quickly.

“Cordella quickly became part of the management team and has carried the vision for Rotoworld.com from 2005 to today,” he said.

According to SportsVideo.org, Cordella served as GM for AllStar before becoming GM of fantasy sports as part of the NBC acquisition. His oversight of the PFT (and CollegeFootballTalk.com) integration and creation of other sports-specific sites helped lead to NBC enjoying growth of 111 percent in unique visitors from February 2009 to February 2010.

Cordella has also been an important figure in the fantasy industry, including a stint with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association board of directors.

“Rick is truly one of the good guys in the industry,” said Jeff Thomas, CEO of World Fantasy Games and former FSTA president. “He has always been a great friend of the industry and is a valuable asset for NBC.”
