RapidDraft Players Want to Beat Guards, Too

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

We passed along the story this week of the 36-year-old “Mean Machine” moniker coming up as the most common fantasy football team name among CBSSports.com users. Turns out it’s not just them.

The folks at RapidDraft.com took a spin through the team name database and turned up the exact same No. 1. Paul Crewe would be proud. Captain Knauer would be peeved. Caretaker, unfortunately, would still be dead.

As a matter of fact, the rebellious gen-pop was not the end of the commonalities. The rest of RapidDraft’s top six (two tied for fifth) shared three other names with the CBS list: “Bulldogs,” “Cowboys” and “da Bears.”

The two differentiators among RD users were “Titans” and “Spartans,” which obviously shows that the RapidDraft game appeals more to fans of Rob Bironas and ancient Greeks militarism.

Considering the ensuing litany of names obviously inspired by favorite NFL franchises, it’s interesting to note that “Packers” is nowhere to be found. Obviously, PETA has gotten to them.

FSB Daily 9/11: Ray Rice, Joe Namath, John Rozek, Jimmy Fallon

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

A roundup of items recently posted on the FSB News page.

– Fantazzle Fantasy Sports has rolled out a free-to-play weekly fantasy football game with Ravens running back Ray Rice as the cover boy. Each week presents a fresh prize pool, with top winners becoming eligible for extra-cash games at Week 8 and Week 16.

– In the first installment of what will be a weekly series throughout the season, Joe Namath provided RapidDraft.com with his thoughts on a few players at each position (except kicker, but who cares about them anyway).

– This week’s sign that fantasy is big time: John Rozek’s selection by World Championship of Fantasy Sports as the top fantasy football player in the world right now landed him a feature story in the Chicago Tribune. The story could provide inspiration to those of us with dreams of high-stakes winnings as well, as it reveals Rozek to not be an obsessive football nut (he doesn’t even get NFL Network) — merely a bright, experienced player who knows the fantasy game.

Stinkball.com is up and running for the 2010 NFL season with a redesigned site. For anyone unfamiliar, Stinkball — in addition to being an ideal name for the next Cartoon Network show — is a fantasy contest in which you score by filling your team with the worst performers.

– Allow us to present the all-Illini fantasy football team, via a Yahoo! draft event. Now let that be the last time anyone presents anything remotely similar.

HuddleHub.com only just launched last week, but the company wound up on Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night show on NBC way back in March. It turns out that fortuitous placement at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival won it some worthwhile media exposure. The Fallon appearance came in a monologue joke: “There’s a new program called HuddleHub that manages all of your fantasy sports teams. They call it the perfect solution for someone who’s too lazy to keep track of being too lazy to play actual sports.”

FSB Daily 8/21: Sprint, HollyStock, MWR Fantasy Sports

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

A roundup of items recently posted on the FSB News page.

– Sprint users can download the free Sprint Football Live app for their smart phones, which includes fantasy team management capabilities.

– HollyStock is the latest new game to apply a fantasy-type model to the world of celebrity gossip. Although the concept might first come across as stock market style, making or losing money based on the whims of other players, the system actually purports to track 200 celebrity news sites daily to tabulate each subject’s actual fantasy-celebrity value.

– It’s a good time to be (or own) Chris Johnson, whether your sport is football or baseball.

– If you think it’s tough to choose between running backs at the top of your fantasy football draft, imagine a league that combines all four “major” American sports and throws into the mix LeBron James, Albert Pujols and whoever the heck plays hockey these days.

– Current and former members of the U.S. Armed Services are eligible to play free fantasy football against their brethren via MWRfantasysports.com, a partnership with RapidDraft.

Broadway Joe Takes RapidDraft Stage

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

We all know Joe Namath. He’s the guy who guaranteed his upstart New York Jets would beat the heavily favored Colts and then did it. He’s the guy who became an enduring cultural icon in a game with notoriously short careers and a city that chews icons up and spits them out.

Now, he’s the guy aiming to beat you in fantasy football — RapidDraft Fantasy Football, to be exact.

“I’m excited about teaming up with RapidDraft,” Namath said. “No one does fantasy football like these guys.”

Broadway Joe” is not only the newest member of the RD avatar lineup. He’ll also be taking part in the strategy behind the avatar, a role filled for the other 10 avatars by experienced fantasy sites.

Most of these experts are folks who spend their days studying football numbers, but Namath brings the unique perspective of a national champion during his three-year run at Alabama and a two-time AFL MVP and four-time league all-star over 12 years in New York City. Namath beyond the numbers with insight into factors such as the real impact of injuries, which players have lost a step and how big a factor weather truly is.

Fresh off being named an inaugural inductee to the Jets’ new Ring of Honor, the hall of fame quarterback joins RapidDraft.com in part to promote his new online venture, BroadwayJoe.tv, which launched Tuesday.

The site is a social portal that affords Namath fans the opportunity to interact with the legend. At the center is a video blog that will feature several posts a week with Namath evaluating the Jets, Alabama and various other stories throughout the world of football. He also promises to tell many stories from a life that has included stints as a game analyst, actor and variety show host.

The message under the “welcome” banner on the new site reads, “My thoughts on the Jets, the Crimson Tide, some of life’s lessons & much more …”

We’ll be interested to hear what Namath has to say at BroadwayJoe.tv, and anyone interested in drafting against the legend can do so any time at RapidDraft.com.
