Content Factory Buys Game Time Decisions

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

The Content Factory, a new media company with former ESPN anchor Dan Patrick at the forefront, announced today the purchase of GameTimeDecisions.net as part of a plan to build its fantasy football presence.

The company, founded by Jimmy de Castro, aims to “revolutionize radio, expand media channels and customize content to meet multidimensional consumer access,” according to the main page of its website. Content Factory also reached a deal with Pro Football Weekly last week to produce a weekly hourlong fantasy football radio show, hosted by PFW’s Hub Arkush.

The proceeds from that show will reportedly be invested in building out GameTimeDecisions.net — a fantasy football subscription site founded by sports talk radio host Brian Swaw — into “the most robust” site of its kind on the Web. In addition, Game Time Decisions will drive a new fantasy contest that will be hosted on Patrick’s website.

The stated goals appear to be a bit lofty considering the saturation of the online fantasy football market that Content Factory is entering, but we’ll see what the company has in mind to make its site “robust.”

How About a Fantasy Nod in NFL Schedule?

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

The expansion of the NFL schedule into previously untapped parts of the week has been a welcome development for many fans, who revel in getting to watch their favorite sport on more than just Sunday afternoon and Monday night.

Two groups, however, figure to be negatively impacted by the changes: families and fantasy players.

Dad (and/or Mom, in a growing number of cases) has long been lost to the couch for the bulk of Sunday, but the NFL week now often stretches from Thursday to the end of Monday. This week’s opener falls on Thursday night, and each week from 10 through 16 will begin with at least one Thursday game. All we can do is try to get the younger kids to bed before kickoff so that the non-football spouses are the only ones with whom we have to make up time.

For fantasy players, though, these Thursday night games in particular can be a pain. Many leagues require lineups to be set before the week’s first game. Doing so three days before most teams play leave us guessing at which questionably injured players might be able to go, when we all know that NFL injury reports are about as trustworthy as Alberto Gonzalez.

This week’s Thursday nighter will even force many leagues — including those in the WCOFF — to draft after a game has already been played. Pat Fitzmaurice of Pro Football Weekly makes a plea for the league to consider us fantasy owners when setting up the schedule, and I’m with him.

So is my wife.
