RotoWire Dominates FSWA Awards

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

The Fantasy Sports Writers Association gave out its 2008 honors on Tuesday at the FSTA winter business conference, and a third of them went to RotoWire.

Repeat victories in the categories of best baseball print publication and best baseball writer (Jeff Erickson) led an effort that garnered six plaques in all for the company. It was the second straight year that RotoWire claimed six awards. No other company earned more than three this time around.

This year’s haul also included writer of the year nods in golf, racing and college sports — the first time that last category has been included in the FSWA program. The lone surprise might have been that RotoWire’s Janet Eagleson ceded the award for top hockey writer to someone else (ESPN’s Sean Allen) for the first time in the category’s three-year existence.

“I’m shocked and surprised since it was a very strong field with a lot of outstanding writers,” RotoWire president Peter Schoenke told FSB.com on Wednesday. “I’m very happy for the first-time winners on our staff and proud that both our top editors for MLB and NFL won awards.”

The FSWA has been giving out awards since 2004. Entries are whittled down to finalists by the board of directors, with winners determined by a panel of three independent judges. This year, that panel included Wisconsin-Stevens Point journalism professor Dr. Steven Hill, Ithaca College journalism professor and Society of Professional Journalists board member Mead Loop, and longtime sports columnist for the Washington Post Len Shapiro.

Here is a full list of Rotowire’s 2008 honors and the finalists in each category:

FSWA Baseball Nominees Present Some Familiar Names

Monday, January 19th, 2009

We’re much closer to the 2009 fantasy baseball season than to the 2008 edition, but it’s still time to recognize the top writing efforts of the year past.

For starters, the list finalists for top magazine is a carbon copy of that from football, with CBS, Rotoworld and Rotowire vying for the honor. Among the 18 total finalists in the six baseball categories, just two come from outlets that launched in the 21st century — Eno Sarris of Baseballguys.com (best Web article) and Tommy Landry of RotoExperts.com (best series).

Otherwise you’ll see lots of representatives from the big boys of the industry, starting with the fantasy veterans that constitute the top writer category. RotoWire’s Jeff Erickson and ESPN’s Jason Grey are the only two writers up for more than one award in baseball, while Yahoo! boasts the only two analysts to have qualified in multiple sports. Scott Pianowski is up for writer of the year in baseball and hockey, and Andy Behrens could come away with top-writer honors in football and best print article in baseball.

The full list follows, with winners to be announced next Tuesday on the first day of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association winter conference.

FSWA Taking Nominations for Annual Awards

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

The Fantasy Sports Writers Association is accepting nominations through the end of the year for its fifth annual writing awards.

The awards encompass football, baseball, basketball, hockey, auto racing, golf and now college sports. The FSWA selects a writer of the year in each of those sports and also presents several awards for top articles and running features in the premier fantasy fields of football and baseball.

This is the first year that the FSWA has included college sports in the list. According to FSWA president Mike Beacom, the recent growth of fantasy college sports helped to spur increased interest in the FSWA that was already evident last year at awards time.

“The 2007 FSWA Awards witnessed a record number of nominations and we are confident this year we will top that mark,” Beacom wrote in the association’s November newsletter, which announced the nomination period. “The FSWA welcomed close to 100 new members during the course of the past year.”

Writers must be enrolled in the FSWA to nominate candidates or win an award. Author names and affiliations are removed for the judging process, and winners are ultimately determined by independent college journalism professors, according to the FSWA. Those interesting in submitting nominations can use the online form any time before the end of the year. Anyone submitting for Magazine of the Year in baseball or football should mail three copies of the publication to the following address:

FSWA
c/o Mike Beacom
P,O, Box 296
Amherst, WI 54406

Awards will be presented at the 2009 Fantasy Sports Trade Association winter business conference in Florida on Jan. 27-28. Last year’s winners included Rotoworld’s Gregg Rosenthal for top football writer, Rotowire’s Jeff Erickson for top baseball writer, Rotowire’s Andre’ Snellings for basketball, Rotowire’s Janet Eagleson for hockey, ESPN’s Christopher Harris for auto racing and CBS Sports’ Ross Davenport for golf.
