FSB Daily 5/7: SI.com-Watercooler, WSJ, Blurb, FF Mama-to-be

Friday, May 7th, 2010

A roundup of items recently posted on the FSB News page.

– Sports Illustrated announced this week that it partnered with game developer Watercooler on a multi-platform fantasy football product. Team management and game connectivity will be available to users via SI.com, Facebook and SI Mobile.

– Nando Di Fino of The Wall Street Journal this week used Yankees middle reliever Alfredo Aceves’ ownership numbers to illustrate differences in the user bases for fantasy games at Yahoo!, ESPN and CBS.

– Andrew Garda, proprietor of ThunderingBlurb.com, contributor to Draftguys.com and Fantasy Sports Channel host, will join the Footballguys.com staff this season.

– As Mother’s Day approaches and threatens to get many of us guys in trouble, FF Librarian Sara Holladay announced on her blog Thursday night that she’s due to have her first child (a son) right around Week 3 of the coming NFL season. This guarantees that she’ll need multiple bye weeks, and a skeptic might wonder if she’s building in an excuse for failing to reprise her Super Bowl trip-winning fantasy play of 2009. Of course, we don’t think that way here at FSB.com, so we’ll just say congratulations and good luck.

Footballguys, FFPC Combine on New Contest

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Footballguys co-owner Joe Bryant provided an unusual number of announcements in Wednesday’s daily subscription e-mail, the biggest of which was a partnership on a new high-stakes contest.

Bryant and fellow Footballguys.com creator David Dodd have combined with Dave Gerczak and Alex Kaganovsky to create JDAD LLC, which will put on the Footballguys Players Championship this summer. The event will consist of live online drafts from Aug. 1 through Sept. 8, currently set at $350 per entry.

“For years, we’ve had customers asking us to create a high stakes contest,” Bryant wrote in the e-mail newsletter. “I’ve wanted to have a presence in this space for a long time and so has David.

“David (Gerzcak) and Alex have a fantastic reputation for outstanding customer service running their FFPC leagues. We think it’s a perfect partnership as they compliment what we do very well.”

According to the releases on both Footballguys.com and the FFPC site, draft times are set twice daily from Aug. 1 through Sept. 8 — 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays, and 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with additions possible. Top prize for the contest is set at $50,000.

The entry of Footballguys into this space will be interesting, because the site’s strong content is often mentioned by competitors in the high-stakes space and the subscriber base brings an immediate pool of potential customers.

Aside from the new high-stakes contest, Footballguys.com also unveiled Wednesday a redesigned site and announced an iPhone app that is awaiting Apple approval for distribution.

Based on screenshots, the free app looks like it will feature quick access to Footballguys content, podcasts and updates as well as NFL team depth charts.

I got my start in the fantasy industry when … Joe Bryant and David Dodds asked me to be a staff writer for Footballguys.com in 2006.

Since then, my fantasy résumé includes: Co-host, “The Five Minute Drill” WebTV show, ONNetworks, 2007-08; Co-Host, “The Audible”; Fantasy Football Expert, Co-Host, “Gametime Decision” 104.3 the Fan, Denver, Colo.

Three questions

1. You’ve reached a fairly prominent spot for both fantasy and NFL draft stuff. Do you get a bigger kick out of scouting and analyzing the draft or analyzing fantasy and fielding all the start/sit questions?

Draft — The NFL draft is the ultimate cliffhanger, seeing how all the pieces fall in place, then the career of each of a cliffhanger in an of itself, seeing whether the teams look wise or foolish when the dust settles. I also love scouting at the all-star game practices and following all of the rumors and subterfuge leading up to draft day.

2. How do you balance stats versus what you see in the games when doing your fantasy work?

Stat analysis is overrated. The sample size in a football season is too small to extrapolate meaningful outcomes, and stat analysis is backward-looking, not forward-looking. Always trust your eyes.

3. For anyone with entrepreneurial visions, what have you and scouting partner Cecil Lammey done behind the scenes to get to where you can make a living covering football?

Treat everyone with respect, give all glory to the game and those who play it, take risks and believe in yourself!

Bonus: How do your parents and college professors feel about you eschewing your law degree to slum it with us sports folks?

I think my law school professors knew that I wasn’t going to practice law. I went to law school to see if I wanted to practice law. The answer was no, and I don’t recommend that strategy to anyone. My mother has always supported me as long as I pursued happiness, so, of course, she’s happy because I’m happy.
