RapidDraft Players Want to Beat Guards, Too

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

We passed along the story this week of the 36-year-old “Mean Machine” moniker coming up as the most common fantasy football team name among CBSSports.com users. Turns out it’s not just them.

The folks at RapidDraft.com took a spin through the team name database and turned up the exact same No. 1. Paul Crewe would be proud. Captain Knauer would be peeved. Caretaker, unfortunately, would still be dead.

As a matter of fact, the rebellious gen-pop was not the end of the commonalities. The rest of RapidDraft’s top six (two tied for fifth) shared three other names with the CBS list: “Bulldogs,” “Cowboys” and “da Bears.”

The two differentiators among RD users were “Titans” and “Spartans,” which obviously shows that the RapidDraft game appeals more to fans of Rob Bironas and ancient Greeks militarism.

Considering the ensuing litany of names obviously inspired by favorite NFL franchises, it’s interesting to note that “Packers” is nowhere to be found. Obviously, PETA has gotten to them.

CBS Players Go to Movies for Fantasy Names

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Say this for fantasy football players: When they get inspired by a movie, they stick with it. At least, that’s my takeaway from looking over the top 200 team names list that CBSSports.com released on Thursday.

The group of most common titles is full of predictables such as “Bulldogs” (for ugly owners), “Cowboys” (for bandwagon riders), “Raiders” (for those who don’t particularly care about football) and “Shockers” (comprising only graduates of Wichita State, I have to assume).

No. 1 on the list, though, is “Mean Machine,” harkening back, of course, to the 1974 football classic The Longest Yard. (I refuse to acknowledge the role of the more recent Adam Sandler turd or 2007’s overlooked The Longest Yard Sale, “the low-budget movie with big-budget depth.”)

Scroll just a little ways down the list, and you’ll find The Karate Kid-inspired “Cobra Kai” at No. 22, followed at No. 29 by “McLovin” of Superbad fame.

The full list can be seen via the first link in this article. The top 20 goes like this:

1. Mean Machine
2. Bulldogs
3. Cowboys
4. Da’ Bears
5. Steel Curtain
6. Shockers
7. Warriors
8. G-Men
9. Raiders
10. :-)
11. Big Dog
12. Eagles
13. Sharks
14. Steelers
15. Show me your TDs
16. Wildcats
17. Gang Green
18. Prime Time
19. Big Blue
20. Rookies

FSB Daily 1/14: Fantasy Meets the Job, FST.net Cleans Up

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

A roundup of recent posts on the FSB News page.

– His occupation as a Utah Jazz beat writer and preoccupation with fantasy basketball can meet somewhat awkwardly for Jim Burton of the (Ogden, Utah) Standard-Examiner. It does seem to have helped him connect with Jazz center Mehmet Okur, though.

– Jan Hubbard of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tells of the long-time Larry Bird League set up to follow the Celtics great’s player rating system. Hubbard also learned that if you’re going to trade Bird in his namesake league, you should at least keep it a secret from him.

– Cal Spears has noticed some issues with ballot-stuffing on FantasyTeamNames.net and is imploring users to police themselves.

My Name is …

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Obviously, the best part of playing in a fantasy league is actually competing against your friends, family members or random strangers willing to donate money to your bank account. For many, though, one small part of this annual competition is coming up with the best team name.

FantasyTeamNames.net has recently launched to cater to the crowd of clever namers. The site allows users to enter fantasy team names and then provides a platform for others to cast a positive or negative vote for each, as well as a chance to comment.

The current top five vote getters among all represented sports (football, baseball, basketball, hockey and NASCAR) comprises the following:

  • Byrnes When I Peavy
  • Honey Nut Ichiros
  • Romosexual Tendencies
  • Letters from Okajima
  • Travis Henry is My Dad (which is reportedly being used — accurately — by at least 463 fantasy players around the nation)

My favorite so far, however, is Ki-Jana Monologues.

The site also features a blog, in which the first post beyond the initial welcome is a set of 10 rules for those pondering a name for the coming season.

FantasyTeamNames.net should promise to be one of those sites that’s just fun to visit occasionally, when you need a break from work.
