What does the former Astros and current Dodgers catcher get? Fantasy, apparently.
This week’s spring training preview edition of Sporting News includes one “Fantasy Tip” from a major leaguer for each division. Ausmus speaks for the National League West, advising: “Do not draft me under any circumstances. In fact, the only people who have drafted me in the past were either related to me or didn’t understand the fantasy baseball scoring system.”
Anyone who thinks that’s just self-deprecating humor must not be familiar with Ausmus’ numbers. In 16 seasons, the catcher has never hit more than nine homers or driven in more than 54 runs. He hasn’t hit better than .235 in three years.
Of course, fantasy players likely didn’t need to be advised against drafting a light-hitting catcher who got into only half of Houston’s games last season and goes into 2009 as a backup to Russell Martin.
Ausmus’ recommendation, though, beats that of Jeremy Guthrie. The Baltimore starter says we should pick him simply because pitching in the spring and summer will be easier than his off-season throwing in snowy Utah.
Welcome back, baseball.
