FSB Daily 9/2: Coors Light, Bodog, AMFL

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

A roundup of recent posts on the FSB News page.

– The Coors Light press conference commercials have been terrific overall. A new fantasy football widget carrying the Coors Light brand and available via NFL.com promises to be interesting. The watery “beer,” on the other hand, I cannot get behind.

– Bodog has suspended its fantasy football games for this season. The company’s customer service department said via e-mail that the move occurred because it lost its development team, which created and kept up the applications. Although it also said Bodog will review its options at the beginning of 2009, recent financial troubles seem to make replacing a team of developers unlikely.

Injuries Ring in New Year of College Football

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Well, a new season of college football is finally, completely underway, and somehow the new prominence of the fantasy college game has yet to bring down the Division I system.

It was an opening weekend of relative upsets, with ranked teams such as Clemson, Virginia Tech, Tennessee and Pittsburgh getting knocked off. Of course, I say “relative” because I think preseason rankings are about the silliest construction in sports, obviously geared toward building hype for early-season matchups.

For fantasy owners and fans of Georgia, Ohio State and Missouri, it was a weekend of some frustration and lingering worry. The Bulldogs watched star tailback Knowshon Moreno hop off the field after hurting a leg. The Buckeyes lost their backfield Heisman candidate, Chris “Beanie” Wells. Missouri, meanwhile, got a scare when all-everything receiver Jeremy Maclin tumbled with what he initially worried was a broken ankle.

Well, some folks can breathe easy today, as Moreno says the cramps that bothered him Saturday will have no impact going forward, and Maclin reports that he’ll be ready for Mizzou’s next game. Wells’ status, on the other hand, remains uncertain, which is bound to try the nerves of any fantasy owner who tapped him in the first round. At least Buckeye fans can seek comfort in the fact that this weekend brings only Ohio University, with another week before the marquee matchup with USC.
