Fantasy Hound Dog Offers New Way to Fantasize

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

As it says in the press release, many games that purport to provide a new method of playing fantasy football merely deliver a slight variation on already-present formats.

The Precision League offering from FantasyHoundDog.com, though, seems to truly be a different way to play. Rather than drafting a team and setting a lineup to beat your opponent each week, an owner is assigned a group of players and must accurately predict each guy’s performance. The one who predicts more accurately wins the matchup.

The style doesn’t take any of the luck out of fantasy football. Players will still get injured. Tipped passes will still turn into touchdowns. Heck, Adam Vinatieri might even throw another touchdown pass. It does call on the fantasy owner to know his players even better, though, as it’s much harder to say Fred Taylor will go for 85 yards but no touchdowns against Houston than to guess that Hines Ward is a better option than Dwayne Bowe in a given week.

Leagues can be started in any week and can include any number of competitors, because the number of teams in the league will have no effect on the quality of players on each squad.

If there’s a similar game out there, I haven’t heard of it. I’m intrigued.

My Name is …

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Obviously, the best part of playing in a fantasy league is actually competing against your friends, family members or random strangers willing to donate money to your bank account. For many, though, one small part of this annual competition is coming up with the best team name.

FantasyTeamNames.net has recently launched to cater to the crowd of clever namers. The site allows users to enter fantasy team names and then provides a platform for others to cast a positive or negative vote for each, as well as a chance to comment.

The current top five vote getters among all represented sports (football, baseball, basketball, hockey and NASCAR) comprises the following:

  • Byrnes When I Peavy
  • Honey Nut Ichiros
  • Romosexual Tendencies
  • Letters from Okajima
  • Travis Henry is My Dad (which is reportedly being used — accurately — by at least 463 fantasy players around the nation)

My favorite so far, however, is Ki-Jana Monologues.

The site also features a blog, in which the first post beyond the initial welcome is a set of 10 rules for those pondering a name for the coming season.

FantasyTeamNames.net should promise to be one of those sites that’s just fun to visit occasionally, when you need a break from work.
